Ego was founded in 1953

In 1953, Gerald Oppenheim was a young chemist and with his wife Rae, a nurse, they founded Ego Pharmaceuticals

Ego develops its first products

Gerald and Rae saw a need for products to restore and maintain healthy skin and developed Ego Pine Tar bath solution, now Pinetarsol remains one of Australia’s most widely used inflammation treatments.

Ego laboratories opens in 1954

Ego opened its first manufacturing laboratory located in the South Eastern suburb of Melbourne's Elsternwick in 1954.

Ego showcases its range in 1959

Gerald attended the Australian Dermatologist's Conference at the Royal Melbourne Hospital to showcase Ego's products

Ego goes Global

Ego expands into New Zealand, Singapore and Papua New Guinea

New Offices open in Elstenwick 1965

Gerald Oppenheim opens office in Elsternwick premise as the company expands


At the request of Melbourne's Queen Victoria Hospital, Ego produces QV Bath Oil for patients to use at home.


After years in Elsternwick, Ego expanded again and moved to Cheltenham


QV Retail packs are created (officially named after the Queen Victoria Hospital) and start selling via pharmacy


Rae takes the lead in creating educational materials working closely with dermatologists and healthcare professionals.


Alan Oppenheim develops the first dissolved hydrocortisone product in the world


Ego earns a Government Small Business Award recognising it's year on year growth and manufacturing prowess


Ego's research and manufacturing plant was built in 1986 in Braeside Melbourne and officially opened by The Hon. John N. Button, Minister for Industry Technology and Commerce


Ego developed SunSense, world's first cosmetically acceptable sunscreen using physical protection blockers and UV absorbers


Ego continues to expand worldwide, launching into the Middle East


Ego launches Aqium Antibacterial Hand Gel, Australia's first rinse-free and soap-free hand sanitiser.


Ego Launches MOOV Head Lice, a result of over 5 years of rsearch and support by Federal Government's START Grant.


Ego now has over 120 products and is sold in over 20 nations


Ego opens world class flammable goods manufacturing facility, creating 63 new jobs for Australia


Ego enters into the China market, launching on leading online stores
