Bed Sore Prevention

A bedsore is an ulcer or reddened, sore skin on the buttocks, heels and elbows which occurs on immobilised patients after a prolonged time in bed. The cause is continual pressure on the site restricting the blood supply to the area.

Inflamed skin on the buttocks of elderly incontinent patients and under the breasts of obese patients, frequently becomes secondarily infected with Candida albicans causing thrush.

Anti-fungal Treatments

QV BAR
If you prefer a cleanser that you can hold in your hand like normal soap, then the QV Bar is for you. It’s a soap free cleanser that contains over one third moisturisers. QV Bar moisturises as it cleans and leaves your skin feeling soft and smooth.

QV BATH OIL
This water dispersible oil is the most effective way to revive large areas of dry or sensitive skin. Treat and protect your skin while relaxing in a bath. For adults add 2 capfuls (20 mL) to a 20cm bath and soak in the bath for 10 to 15 minutes. Do not use soap. QV Bath Oil is also available in a handy shower pack as most people do not have time to luxuriate in a bathtub every day. QV Bath Oil leaves the skin feeling soft and smooth with a healthy glow.

Good nursing care is essential. Changing the patient’s position frequently from side to side will reduce the pressure on one site. Massaging the areas which are under pressure, every 2 - 4 hours will improve circulation and lessen the possibility of bed sores or ulcers developing.

Keeping the skin in good condition will help prevent the skin from breaking. Emollient products can be massaged into the skin to improve circulation and protect the skin. Areas at risk should be handled gently. Increasing skin blood flow with IR lamps may help healing. Avoid soap which may dry the skin and further irritate.
