The fancy term for stretchmarks is striae, and they are generally caused by the expansion of the skin (such as in pregnancy or weight gain).
Scarring is best determined by genetics, meaning some people are predisposed to scarring. Intensive moisturising during healing can help. A recent review of several scar and stretchmark creams on the market has found that they are essentially helpful because they are hydrating1.
